“Snot,” he addresses me with the ridiculous nickname he gave me when I was kid, “do you mind?” I don’t have time to answer before he slips his hand on my waist and drags me closer to him. “The grey of your dress will help pop the color of my eyes,” he whispers in my ear.

If I wasn’t aware of who Chris is, I could see his action as flirtatious, but I know better than to think this is anything more than him using me to look good.

Over the years, I’ve hoped something might happen between us, but it never did.

So I kept my too-obvious-of-a-crush to myself and never tried anything.

At first, it was because we were ten years apart, then it was because I saw the number of men or woman Chris was dating, later I learned that his first male hook up was my brother Luke, and it felt all too incestuous, too close to home.

“What is your aversion to being nice?”
He leans in, and I stay standing tall. Well, as tall as I can. Then he whispers, “You weren’t on the guest list. And neither was your cousin. Easton doesn’t appreciate rule breakers. Me, on the other hand, find it fascinating.”
“My bad we didn’t RSVP. We weren’t even going to come. It was a last-minute decision. It’s not Baker or Abhi’s fault.”
