My past taught me to play it safe.

One night, and all I wanted was more of his wildfire.
One challenge and my carefully constructed walls tumbled down.
Amidst the rubble, I realized there was more to this man than I ever dreamed.
When everything fell apart, he showed me what it meant to stay.
How to truly live.

Excerpt:
I leaned against the tree at the edge of the beach, taking in the show. The woman seemed to be one with the water. Smooth strokes cut through the inletâs subtle waves. They were both graceful and powerful, restrained and explosive. A juxtaposition so similar to the woman herself.
Kenna made her way towards the rocky shore. Climbing to her feet, rivulets of water traced paths down curves that even her full-coverage, black Speedo couldnât disguise. She wrung out her hair, and the long, dark sheet sprang up in unexpected curls. They reminded me of that part of Kenna she liked to hide away from the world.
Her movements faltered, and then she swiped her towel up from the beach. âWhat are you doing here?â
I grinned, pushing off the tree trunk and striding towards her. âCaelyn told me this was a good spot for paddleboarding.â
Kenna mumbled something about her friend being a traitor. âIâm surprised youâre even up this early.â
I gave a little shrug. I had to be at a meeting at ten, so this was the only opportunity Iâd have all day to be on the water. âEvery day is different.â
âMust be nice to just flit around wherever the wind takes you.â
My phone buzzed in my pocket, and I slid it out. A familiar number, one I wished like hell I could forget, flashed across my screen along with a text.
Hey, Crosby. Can we talk? Itâs important.
My face went hard as ice seemed to slide through my veins. Aliciaâs gamble hadnât paid off, and now she was trying to get her second choice back on the line. Not in this lifetime.
A cold hand grazed my forearm, yet somehow, the touch seemed to heat my skin. âAre you okay?â
I gave my head a little shake, plastering on my signature carefree smile. âJust those damn telemarketers. They never give up.â
Kennaâs hand fell away, and she took a step back. âYou can just tell me to mind my own business. You donât have to lie.â
I instantly felt the loss of her heat, the faint buzz on my skin where sheâd touched me. âFair enough.â Kenna kept her gaze locked to mine as if daring me to tell her the truth. I took the cowardâs way out and changed the subject. âI like these.â I reached out and took a strand of her hair in my fingers, releasing it and letting the curl bounce.
Pink tinged her cheeks. âI prefer it straight.â
My grin grew wider. âI donât know, Brown Eyes, I think you should let it run wild.â And what I would give to see this woman free and untamed.

Kenna endured a painful childhood until as a preteen she found the home and family that she never thought she would. Surrounded by love and acceptance she felt protected however she has recently lost the one person who grounded her and isnât prepared for the effect it is having on her life.
Crosby is a man who is determined to forge his own path which is how he finds himself living on Anchor Island and his career in law. Although he and Kenna arenât close they do know each other and he is a man who is always willing to protect those who canât protect themselves so when he sees the situation she is in he is determined to lend a helping hand.
Crosby and Kenna appear to be polar opposites both in their upbringing and their current lifestyles they are both about to find out that they fit together like pieces of a puzzle. Neither was looking for love or a relationship but sometimes the best things in life happen when you least expect it. The story has the perfect balance of romance, suspense and emotion that will keep you enthralled from beginning to end.
