SYNOPSIS

They’re perfect for each other. Too bad they’re just friends.

Jill: Damien and I; best friends forever. Short of matching bracelets, that’s exactly what we are. We share so much. A love for superhero movies, reality TV and even the same sense of humour. In two years we’ve never once run out of things to talk about.

But, as they say: opposites and mystery attract, right? He seems to agree, because when I drunkenly suggest we add certain ‘benefits’ to our friendship, he reacts with complete shock. Best to stuff those confusing emotions back in the closet where they belong.

When I find out he’s started dating someone else, I know for sure that I’ve missed my chance.

Damien: It’s nearly two years to the day that I first fell in love with Jill. As interns and now coworkers on the same TV production crew, we’ve spent many long days and nights in each other’s presence. So near and always out of reach. I’m nowhere near her type, so she’d never consider me as anything other than her slightly overweight and nerdy best friend.

After a particularly awkward drunken conversation one night, I realize it’s time to get past my unrequited obsession and take control of my love life before I ruin all the good stuff we do have. Jill might be the woman of my dreams and my soul mate, but that’s just it. A hopeless dream which could never come true. Or can it?

EXCERPT

As soon as Gavin leaves me to it, I do what I always do on set: I pretend to be fully absorbed in my work, while actually keeping an eye out for Jill in my peripheral vision. Once I spot her coming out of the prep kitchen, it immediately makes me feel better, sort of.

How does it matter what the new show is going to be about? As long as she’ll be there, it’ll be bearable. And despite my earlier reservations about her career, she did choose to bring me onboard, at least this time.

The last thing I should be doing right now is letting my own lack of a love life get me down. I ought to be more proactive; that’s what I should do. Maybe reactivate my profiles and give internet dating another shot. Who knows, watching a bunch of other people go on first dates might teach me a thing or two.

But then… Dating. Ugh.

The only person I want to be dating is standing right there, talking enthusiastically with her phone pressed up to her ear. Jill.

Beautiful, intelligent, ambitious, talented Jill. The whole package. My soul mate, though she’ll never know it, because I sure as hell am not going to tell her.

I’ve seen her type when it comes to men, and I’m basically the exact opposite. Through our shared love for superhero movies, I’ve learned that her celebrity crush is Chris Hemsworth as Thor. The antithesis of me personified, unless you count fat Thor from Endgame, and even then.

Anyway, nobody counts fat Thor from Endgame.

Her crush on regular-sized Thor tracks perfectly with the guy she used to date when we were still in college. Frank-something, an aspiring actor with perfect blond hair and confidence—almost cockiness—and a gym bod to match.

No, Jill and I are friends, but that’s it. It’s the best I can hope for.

That’s not so bad, is it?
