It’s been one hell of a year.
If I’m being honest, it’s been one hell of a life.
For years my worth has been tied up in one of two things: goaltender for the San Diego Enforcers, and husband—then ex-husband—of the oldest MacTavish daughter.
Regret is a heavy thing and it’s weighing on me.
Now I’m retiring myself up to the wooded island my family called a second home growing up.
Getting away from the limelight.
Feeling closer to my roots.
I’m fully prepared to live out the rest of my life alone up here in seclusion.
And then I meet her.
Timid. Cautious. And so damn beautiful.
I should stay away.
She doesn’t need my brand of baggage.
But damn if I can’t help myself.
Trying to focus on the sound of the gentle waves of Lake Superior, I most certainly was not keeping my ears open for the neighbor’s voice.
A voice that was the type that carried.
It took far more energy to not focus on the baritone notes than to just give in and let them wash over me.
He had a pleasant voice. Not as harsh as my father’s or my last husband’s, nor as tinny as my late husband’s.
It wasn’t a voice that scared me—but that thought did.
Nearly twelve years of words and rules and “God’s laws” were hard to erase. Add to that the six or so years of being a wife, and I wasn’t sure that I wanted the outside world’s version of coupling.
Growing up, all I heard about was it was sinful for a woman to choose her husband; that it was God’s choice, and God’s choice went through my father.
It was a sin for women to speak with men. It was a sin for women to look longingly at a man who wasn’t her husband—hell, it was a sin to look longingly, period, as it was an outward sign of lust.
Keep your words to yourself.
Keep your chin down.
And do as your husband says.
For the last two decades hockey has been Jonny’s life but with the end of his career comes the end of his painful marriage. He is relocating to the isolation and privacy of the quiet island and didn’t think he was prepared to let another woman into his life until he met Summer.
Summer has endured a past that no on should have to and is trying to find a sense of peace and safety on the island. She doesn’t allow anyone close, especially men, but there is something about Jonny that breaches her defenses and makes her feel like she can trust him.
Jonny is everything you could want in a man and so much more as he allows the relationship to move at Summer’s pace and it was great to catch up with the other characters we know and love.
