EXCERPT:

โ€œDo you ever still think about it? That summer?โ€ he asks.

โ€œSometimes.โ€ I shrug, trying to be noncommittal.

His hands slide onto the counter on either side of me, and he leans down. I close my eyes because I canโ€™t look at him. Iโ€™m trying to think unsexy things. Find my spine and remember all the reasons I hate him. But right now, Iโ€™m just glad he didnโ€™t go home with her. Happy he had dessert with me. That heโ€™s smiling at me. Thinking about me.

โ€œAnd is it still my voice you hear talking you through it?โ€

โ€œYes.โ€ The wordโ€™s out before I can stop it.

Damn.

โ€œI meanโ€ฆ it was back then. Not now.โ€ I clear my throat and try to stand a little taller, the heat burning its way up my cheeks and down my neck until I can even see the flush spreading over my chest.

โ€œDefinitely not now.โ€ I can hear the amusement in his voice, and when I look up, his eyes are burning with the kind of intensity I havenโ€™t seen in someone in years. The kind thatโ€™s going to take me under. I have to regain control here, or this is going to spiral out.

โ€œWe should talk about what other things we can work on with the list. What else you might be able to do this week. Try to set you up on a different date.โ€

His eyes search mine for a moment, but he doesnโ€™t say anything.

โ€œThe list is important,โ€ I reiterate.

โ€œI like your list, Madness.โ€ Hearing him call me the nickname he used to that summer does something for me that it shouldnโ€™t. โ€œIโ€™ll jump through all the hoops you want me to.โ€ He closes the distance between us, so close his lips are at my ear, and his body ghosts over mine. โ€œBut you should know I have ulterior motives. Thereโ€™s only one thing I want.โ€

Blurb:

Pro football might see me as their favorite underdog, but Madison Westfield would rather see me six feet under.

My ex-best friendโ€™s little sister has every reason to hate me.

I took her boyfriendโ€™s spot on this team, her brother might lose his too, and our short-lived engagement years ago is part of the reason our families are locked in a grudge match that has the whole league on edge.

Ruining me would fix most of her problems, but she’s stuck trying to work a PR miracle with my career instead.

Making my way through her build-a-better-image checklist is the kind of torture I’ll gladly sign up for, especially if I get to help her prove everyone wrong.

But it means we’re spending a lot of time alone together, and when it comes to Madison, I’ll take any chance she gives me.

Even if it means there’s hell to payโ€”on and off the field.
