𝐄𝐗𝐂𝐄𝐑𝐏𝐓:
When Dalton played us this song at my house last month, all I could think about was Maya. She was always this thing in my life that I had so many feelings for, feelings I wasn’t sure I even fully understood.
But she was also like poison to me, poison that I knew I had to stay away from.
At least, that’s what I always told myself.
Now, I’m not so sure.
When the song says, “She’ll probably be the death of me. But damn if it ain’t sweet,” I feel that shit so deep in my soul that it hurts.
I don’t know what I thought we would become or how our lives would be when we were older, but I know I never imagined my life without her. That was never even an option.
Now, I feel like she’s slipping away, and there’s nothing I can do to stop it.
I sing at the top of my lungs, “My pretty little poison,” hoping it heals whatever is going on in my heart and my mind for at least the time being.
Right now, that’s all I can ask for. I’ll have to figure out the rest as time goes by.
There’s one thing for sure though: she can’t cut me out of her life completely.
I wouldn’t survive it.

𝐄𝐗𝐂𝐄𝐑𝐏𝐓:
“Kal Seward? How did you guys allow Whit to end up with his ring on her finger?”
Marks hits the turn signal, pulls into the hotel parking lot, and throws it in park in front of the entrance.
He turns in his seat and looks at me. “You needed to do your thing, Pope, and we understand. We all gave you the space to do that. You did a season in the Majors, and we all hung back cheering you on. You come back here and start dissing our life choices? Nah man.” He opens the door and climbs out.
I glance at Danny who holds out a fist, I simply look at. “Bump it.” I do so begrudgingly. “I’ll pick your ass up at seven so you can grab your rental and do whatever you need to do.”
“Yeah man, yeah.”
Marks opens the door for me, and I slide out.
After shutting it behind me, I give as close to an apology as I can muster today. “Not trying to start shit.”
“Understood,” he says, rounding the front of the patrol car. “You’ll get it tomorrow when you inevitably run into Whit and give her shit about that ring.” He opens his door and taps the roof of the car. “Go easy on her. She’s a single mom and doing the best she can.”
I’m not sure what the hell is happening right now, but I’m pretty damn sure I’m on another fucking planet, or in an alternate universe because I’m not drunk enough to have imagined that Marks just said Whit was a mother.

𝐄𝐗𝐂𝐄𝐑𝐏𝐓:
He takes off in a sprint and I turn to run but before I can get very far his arms come around me and he hoists me up and over his shoulder. Then he slaps my behind and takes off for the water as I kick.
We stroll into the surf behind the others.
The warm water laps at my skin as I slide down Sebastian’s body just as a wave crashes over us.
The rush of water tosses me into him and he catches me and pulls me to his chest as I sputter and cough up seawater.
Once I’m stable I splash him in the face as he reaches out to clasp my waist. I struggle to kick past him but he has a firm grip on me.
“My dress is all wet and I lost my sandals,” I gripe.
“I’m sorry,” he laughs out as he buries his face in my neck.
“You don’t sound sorry,” I say as I push against him.
He locks his biceps and I finally give up and wrap my arms around his broad shoulders.
My fingers find the hair at the nape of his neck as I look over my shoulder to see where Amiya is off in the distance being tossed into the waves by Anson.
I bring my eyes back to Sebastian and that hidden dimple peeks out of his right cheek.
“Now that you have me what are you gonna do with me,” I ask.
A glint of mischief fills his eyes.
He takes a huge step moving us deeper into the ocean and I instinctively wrap my legs around his waist as we reach a depth that is over my head.
