๐„๐—๐‚๐„๐‘๐๐“:

โ€œI need to talk to you,โ€ he said as soon as he reached me, his hands grasping for mine as I glanced around.

There wasnโ€™t much of a crowd at the moment, which I was grateful for, but the few people waiting on their to-go orders were definitely watching us with interest. Matthew created a scene everywhere he went, and the restaurant was no exception.

โ€œNo thanks,โ€ I responded, feeling a little embarrassed at the intimate knowledge he now held.

It was going to be this big deal between usโ€”it always turned into a big deal.

โ€œWe need to finish our conversation.โ€ His thumb started making small circles on top of my hand.

โ€œWe donโ€™t really need to have a conversation about it at all,โ€ I said, shaking my head. โ€œEspecially not here.โ€

Matthew continued holding my hands. His were so big and all-encompassing, the same way that he was. โ€œYouโ€™re right,โ€ he agreed a little too easily. โ€œLet me take you out tonight. A real date. Iโ€™m ready to move past the friend zone.โ€

He still wants to date me?

โ€œYouโ€™ve been in the friend zone for five seconds.โ€

My anxiety actually started to ease. Instead of making me uncomfortable, like he tended to do, he was having the opposite effect.

โ€œFive seconds too long if you ask me.โ€ He grinned. โ€œCome on, Bells. Letโ€™s stop playing this game.โ€

โ€œWhat game?โ€

โ€œThe one where you pretend you donโ€™t want me just as much as I want you.โ€

โ€œI never said I didnโ€™t want you. I just said we donโ€™t know each other anymore,โ€ I clarified because wanting the man was not the issue.

โ€œYou were willing to get to know that stupid fireman on a date. Why canโ€™t you do the same for me?โ€

Dammit.

That was actually a fair point.

He released one of my hands and poked the side of my head with his finger. โ€œI can see your wheels spinning. Give me one date. If itโ€™s awful and thereโ€™s nothing between us, Iโ€™ll leave you alone.โ€

I had to stop myself from laughing hysterically. As if thereโ€™d ever be nothing between us. At least not on my end. I wasnโ€™t sure how to not have feelings for him.

โ€œTwo first dates in one day? Thatโ€™s gotta be some kind of record.โ€ I laughed, but Matthew was not amused. His jaw flexed before he leaned closer to me, his lips at my ear.

โ€œIโ€™ll make you forget all about that other guy. Say yes, Bells.โ€

I sucked in a breath before finally caving. Denying him was exhausting. And to be honest, I wanted to go.

โ€œYes,โ€ I said.

Matthewโ€™s smile took up his entire face as he dropped my other hand and pumped a fist in the air. โ€œIโ€™ll pick you up at seven. Youโ€™re not working, right?โ€ He glanced toward the bar, where Anna was still trying to eavesdrop.

โ€œI have the day off.โ€

โ€œWeโ€™ll mourn the loss of the glasses later,โ€ he teased.

I instantly wondered how many Anna had broken today. โ€œShe broke another one?โ€

โ€œOne that I know of,โ€ he said before giving me a kiss on the cheek. โ€œDress for the resort. Thatโ€™s where Iโ€™m taking you,โ€ he instructed before disappearing out the door as quickly as heโ€™d come through it.

That man was something else, making demands and then disappearing before I could even agree or argue.

BLURB:

Crushing on Matthew O’Grady didn’t work out very well for me in the past. When he left Sugar Mountain for the NHL, he took my hopeful teenage heart with him. I was crushed beyond repair, and he never even knew it. But now he’s back in town, working at the resort his family owns and coming into my bar every. single. shift. He claims to want me, but a guy like Matthew doesn’t want any one woman for long.

Bella Sanchez is an absolute smoke show. I know I have a reputation of for being a playboy; the kind of guy who sleeps around with no strings attached. But that was the old me. The new me is back home in Sugar Mountain for good and looking for all the strings. The only problem is, Bella doesn’t believe me when I tell her I want her.

But I’m a stubborn man, and I won’t stop chasing her until she’s mine.

๐„๐—๐‚๐„๐‘๐๐“:

โ€œWhy didnโ€™t you come home when you finished college if the lodge was so important to you?โ€

I dropped my hand and let my forehead hit the window. The glass was cool, but it did nothing to temper the fiery anger still surging through my blood from dealing with the sheriff.

โ€œI ran into a bit of badโ€”โ€

โ€œLuck.โ€

I blinked in surprise when Risky finished my sentence for me. I saw him smirk out of the corner of my eye.

โ€œIโ€™ve noticed thatโ€™s your default explanation for everything that goes wrong. Big or small. Itโ€™s nothing more than luck. Somehow, the power going out and someone taking a shot at you are equally unlucky.โ€ He turned his head slightly to give me a pensive look. โ€œI think your perception might be off.โ€

I laughed for real this time and held up my hand and started ticking things off on my fingers. โ€œI was born to parents who act like theyโ€™re on perpetual spring break. The first time my grandpa tried to teach me to ride a bike, I broke my arm. On my first day of school, I got attacked by a loose dog and ended up needing twenty stitches. The first time I went camping, I fell into a patch of poison oak and nearly died from an allergic reaction. I got lost in a blizzard when I was ten and had the stateโ€™s search and rescue teams out looking for me. I thought it would be fun to join a sport in middle school. I played one game of soccer and left the game with a broken nose. I got this truck for my birthday when I was sixteen. Thank God my granddad knew I needed a tank because the first time I drove it without him supervising from the passenger seat, I ended up in a multi-car pileup on the pass. And donโ€™t get me started on my love life.โ€ Because that was where things had really turned into a train wreck. The situation with Baker had been enough to turn me off of dating for the rest of my life.

โ€œBut I want to ask about your love life. Iโ€™m curious if thereโ€™s anyone you can think of who might want to take a shot at you.โ€

I frowned and shifted on the hard seat uncomfortably. โ€œYou donโ€™t think it was a wayward hunter?โ€

He gave me a look that indicated I shouldnโ€™t ask dumb questions that I already knew the answer to.

โ€œI only have one ex capable of hurting someone. But his target was never me. It was himself.โ€ I shuddered as memories of the bloody night broke free from the chains Iโ€™d kept wrapped around them. โ€œHeโ€™s no longer a threat to anyone. He died.โ€

BLURB:

Sometimes the universe has jokes.

Like a woman named Lucky Fortune who has lived her whole life plagued by one mishap and misfortune after another. The catastrophes that regularly derail her life would crush a normal person, but Lucky is stubbornly resilient.

Lucky refuses to let her unending run of bad luck ruin the opportunity to build on her grandparentsโ€™ dream and carve out one of her own.

But forces greater than chance are out to sabotage her new life. Theyโ€™re after the lodge, the land, and they want Lucky out of the way by any means necessary. Danger lurks closer than Lucky knows.

Fortunately, sheโ€™s found herself lucky in love for the first time ever, thanks to the secretive drifter she picked up and brought home on a whim. By day he plays the role of the worst handyman in existence. But when the stakes are raised, and Luckyโ€™s life is on the line, heโ€™ll move mountains to keep her and her legacy out of the wrong hands.
