What to expect:
๐ Small Town Romance
๐ Retired Hockey Player
๐ Reformed Playboy
๐๐๐๐๐๐๐:
โI need to talk to you,โ he said as soon as he reached me, his hands grasping for mine as I glanced around.
There wasnโt much of a crowd at the moment, which I was grateful for, but the few people waiting on their to-go orders were definitely watching us with interest. Matthew created a scene everywhere he went, and the restaurant was no exception.
โNo thanks,โ I responded, feeling a little embarrassed at the intimate knowledge he now held.
It was going to be this big deal between usโit always turned into a big deal.
โWe need to finish our conversation.โ His thumb started making small circles on top of my hand.
โWe donโt really need to have a conversation about it at all,โ I said, shaking my head. โEspecially not here.โ
Matthew continued holding my hands. His were so big and all-encompassing, the same way that he was. โYouโre right,โ he agreed a little too easily. โLet me take you out tonight. A real date. Iโm ready to move past the friend zone.โ
He still wants to date me?
โYouโve been in the friend zone for five seconds.โ
My anxiety actually started to ease. Instead of making me uncomfortable, like he tended to do, he was having the opposite effect.
โFive seconds too long if you ask me.โ He grinned. โCome on, Bells. Letโs stop playing this game.โ
โWhat game?โ
โThe one where you pretend you donโt want me just as much as I want you.โ
โI never said I didnโt want you. I just said we donโt know each other anymore,โ I clarified because wanting the man was not the issue.
โYou were willing to get to know that stupid fireman on a date. Why canโt you do the same for me?โ
Dammit.
That was actually a fair point.
He released one of my hands and poked the side of my head with his finger. โI can see your wheels spinning. Give me one date. If itโs awful and thereโs nothing between us, Iโll leave you alone.โ
I had to stop myself from laughing hysterically. As if thereโd ever be nothing between us. At least not on my end. I wasnโt sure how to not have feelings for him.
โTwo first dates in one day? Thatโs gotta be some kind of record.โ I laughed, but Matthew was not amused. His jaw flexed before he leaned closer to me, his lips at my ear.
โIโll make you forget all about that other guy. Say yes, Bells.โ
I sucked in a breath before finally caving. Denying him was exhausting. And to be honest, I wanted to go.
โYes,โ I said.
Matthewโs smile took up his entire face as he dropped my other hand and pumped a fist in the air. โIโll pick you up at seven. Youโre not working, right?โ He glanced toward the bar, where Anna was still trying to eavesdrop.
โI have the day off.โ
โWeโll mourn the loss of the glasses later,โ he teased.
I instantly wondered how many Anna had broken today. โShe broke another one?โ
โOne that I know of,โ he said before giving me a kiss on the cheek. โDress for the resort. Thatโs where Iโm taking you,โ he instructed before disappearing out the door as quickly as heโd come through it.
That man was something else, making demands and then disappearing before I could even agree or argue.
BLURB:
Crushing on Matthew O’Grady didn’t work out very well for me in the past. When he left Sugar Mountain for the NHL, he took my hopeful teenage heart with him. I was crushed beyond repair, and he never even knew it. But now he’s back in town, working at the resort his family owns and coming into my bar every. single. shift. He claims to want me, but a guy like Matthew doesn’t want any one woman for long.
Bella Sanchez is an absolute smoke show. I know I have a reputation of for being a playboy; the kind of guy who sleeps around with no strings attached. But that was the old me. The new me is back home in Sugar Mountain for good and looking for all the strings. The only problem is, Bella doesn’t believe me when I tell her I want her.
But I’m a stubborn man, and I won’t stop chasing her until she’s mine.

Tropes:
๐Black cat gf/Golden retriever BF (but he bites)
๐Small Town
๐Secret crush
๐Hidden identity
๐Equal parts kissing and murder!
๐Very cool cameos
๐๐๐๐๐๐๐:
โWhy didnโt you come home when you finished college if the lodge was so important to you?โ
I dropped my hand and let my forehead hit the window. The glass was cool, but it did nothing to temper the fiery anger still surging through my blood from dealing with the sheriff.
โI ran into a bit of badโโ
โLuck.โ
I blinked in surprise when Risky finished my sentence for me. I saw him smirk out of the corner of my eye.
โIโve noticed thatโs your default explanation for everything that goes wrong. Big or small. Itโs nothing more than luck. Somehow, the power going out and someone taking a shot at you are equally unlucky.โ He turned his head slightly to give me a pensive look. โI think your perception might be off.โ
I laughed for real this time and held up my hand and started ticking things off on my fingers. โI was born to parents who act like theyโre on perpetual spring break. The first time my grandpa tried to teach me to ride a bike, I broke my arm. On my first day of school, I got attacked by a loose dog and ended up needing twenty stitches. The first time I went camping, I fell into a patch of poison oak and nearly died from an allergic reaction. I got lost in a blizzard when I was ten and had the stateโs search and rescue teams out looking for me. I thought it would be fun to join a sport in middle school. I played one game of soccer and left the game with a broken nose. I got this truck for my birthday when I was sixteen. Thank God my granddad knew I needed a tank because the first time I drove it without him supervising from the passenger seat, I ended up in a multi-car pileup on the pass. And donโt get me started on my love life.โ Because that was where things had really turned into a train wreck. The situation with Baker had been enough to turn me off of dating for the rest of my life.
โBut I want to ask about your love life. Iโm curious if thereโs anyone you can think of who might want to take a shot at you.โ
I frowned and shifted on the hard seat uncomfortably. โYou donโt think it was a wayward hunter?โ
He gave me a look that indicated I shouldnโt ask dumb questions that I already knew the answer to.
โI only have one ex capable of hurting someone. But his target was never me. It was himself.โ I shuddered as memories of the bloody night broke free from the chains Iโd kept wrapped around them. โHeโs no longer a threat to anyone. He died.โ
