Excerpt:
โ€œEnjoying your boring plain black coffee?โ€ she asks, gifting me with a smile before she takes a sip of her frothy one.
โ€œItโ€™s delicious,โ€ I tell her as we approach the library. โ€œWant a sip?โ€
She scrunches her nose up, and itโ€™s cute as fuck. โ€œNo, thank you. Iโ€™ll stick with my white chocolate cinnamon latte. Itโ€™s so yummy. In fact, maybe you should try it.โ€
Sheโ€™s swirling her straw in her whipped cream, and I fake a shudder. โ€œNot happening,โ€ I say, leaning my back against the stone exterior and pulling Bridgette close.
โ€œAre you judging my whipped cream? Casting doubt on this most glorious of condiments?โ€
โ€œItโ€™s not a condiment,โ€ I correct, determined to set this wayward beauty straight. โ€œItโ€™s weird. Itโ€™s like milky air. Who wants to taste that?โ€
โ€œPeople who like putting delicious things in their mouths,โ€ she retorts. It takes a second for her cheeks to turn pink as she realizes what she just said.
โ€œReally? Tell me more,โ€ I tease, because Iโ€™m a filthy bastard like that. Studying with a hard-on isnโ€™t ideal, but Iโ€™ve done it several times in the past week and lived to tell the tale, so Iโ€™ll survive this, too.
She thinks sheโ€™s being slick when she swipes a manicured finger into the pile of whipped cream that tops her drink, and then extends that finger in my direction. I catch her hand easily and turn it back on her, causing a smear of whipped cream to land on her pouty lips.
โ€œOops,โ€ I say, no trace of contrition in my tone. She looks so damn cute that I canโ€™t help but lean in for a quick kiss. As my lips brush over hers, my life changes forever. โ€œF*ck. Thatโ€™s delicious.โ€ My tongue darts out of my mouth to capture any last remnants of sweetness.
Her green eyes shine as she kisses me back. โ€œTold you so. Iโ€™ll text you later.โ€
โ€œYou should come to my place later. You can meet the one roommate I actually like, and then we can get coffee. I think youโ€™ve converted me.โ€
Her laugh is musical as she sashays down the brick walkway. I watch her go, and then I turn to head inside Friedman Library, but I nearly plow right over Blue on my way to the steps. Heโ€™s standing like a damn statue in the middle of the sidewalk, his mouth hanging open like heโ€™s a f*cking fish or something.
I brush past him, but he doesnโ€™t follow me. Heโ€™s just standing there staring at the stone wall where Bridgette and I were saying goodbye.
โ€œWhat?โ€ I ask, taking a sip of my coffee and wondering what the hell his deal is.
My best friend doesnโ€™t even blink. He just stares blankly and poses a question. โ€œWhat. The. F*ck. Are. You. Doing?
I roll my eyes because he thinks Iโ€™m the dramatic one. โ€œItโ€™s called kissing. Itโ€™s f*cking awesome. You should try it sometime.โ€
โ€œTell me you know who that is,โ€ he says, his voice lethally calm.
โ€œThe girl I was kissing goodbye?โ€ I ask, my brow furrowed. What the f*ck is his problem?
โ€œThat’s not just a kiss goodbye, but whatever. Whoโ€™s the girl?โ€
Iโ€™ve known Blue almost my entire life, and while he can be a lot to handle, heโ€™s never this theatrical. โ€œThatโ€™s my girlfriend.โ€
His eyes blink comically, like heโ€™s suddenly morphed into the cartoon version of himself. โ€œYour what-the-ever-loving-f*ck?โ€
Okay, now Iโ€™m starting to get annoyed. He knows Iโ€™ve been seeing someone. I havenโ€™t been hiding it. โ€œIt’s new, but thatโ€™s the girl Iโ€™ve been telling you about. Bridgetteโ€™s it for me.โ€ If my best friend has a problem with Bridgetteโ€”especially after seeing her for all of a minuteโ€”then heโ€™s going to have a damn issue with me.
โ€œBridgette? Thatโ€™s what you call her?โ€ His question brings me back to the moment and the realization that weโ€™re standing in the middle of campus. Itโ€™s midday and people are milling all around us. Iโ€™m not in the mood for his line of questioning, but I definitely donโ€™t need to be interrogated like a hostile witness with a damn audience.
โ€œYeah,โ€ I answer, โ€œbecause thatโ€™s her name. What the hell is wrong with you?โ€ I ask, making my way up the steps and out of the crowd.
โ€œWhatโ€™s her last name?โ€ Blue asks, following me inside.
โ€œWhatโ€™s with the third degree?โ€ I ask, heading straight to the quiet study rooms. Thereโ€™s an empty one, so I stride inside and toss my bag on one of the chairs before turning to my best friend to find out what the hell his problem is.
โ€œWhat is her last name?โ€ he asks again.
I smirk at him while I tap my chin in mock concentration. โ€œHmmm.. let me thinkโ€ฆoh, yeah, I remember. It’s Whyโ€™sMyBestFriendBeingADickhole?โ€
โ€œItโ€™s not that,โ€ he says, shaking his head.
I love the guy. We couldnโ€™t be any closer if we were blood brothers. But right now, heโ€™s really pissing me off. โ€œOh, really? How the hell do you know?โ€
โ€œBecause itโ€™s Mikalski.โ€ he says, slumping down into one of the burgundy plastic chairs.
โ€œItโ€™s whโ€”โ€ I stop cold when I realize two things. The first is that I donโ€™t know the current last name of my future wife. The second is that Iโ€™ve heard the name Mikalski before.
Blueโ€™s got that same wild look in his eyes now as he did in the courtyard. โ€œI just watched you try to suck the lips off Birdie.โ€
โ€œWhoโ€™s Birdie? My girlfriendโ€™s name is Bridgette.โ€
โ€œYep,โ€ He nods slowly. โ€œItโ€™s Bridgette Mikalski. Also known as Mickeyโ€™s twin sister, Birdie.โ€

BLURB:
Body Check is a forbidden romance featuring a grumpy hero and a curvy heroine who just can’t stay away from each other!

Iโ€™m the teammate nobody likes. I donโ€™t play well with others, and I hog the puck. If I have a choice between passing or trying to score, Iโ€™ll take the shot every time.

Itโ€™s not my fault that nobody else is as good as I am.

When I transfer to Bainbridge University, itโ€™s no surprise that my new team isnโ€™t happy to see me. After all, I used to be their biggest rival, and I loved nothing more than scoring on them. Okay, there was one thing I enjoyed more, and that was getting under the skin of one of their D-Men, Mickey Mikalski.

I count on a frosty reception from my new team. I count on Mickey getting on my very last nerve.

What I donโ€™t count on is falling in love with his sister.

Body Check is the second book in Season Two of the Bainbridge U Hockey series, and it can be enjoyed as a standalone. If you love surly heroes who don’t play well with others, body-positive heroines who know their worth, and steamy scenes that will make you want to take a dip in the pool just to cool off, then Dutton and Birdie’s love story is for you!
