His hand cups my cheek. “I’ll do my best to give you what you desire. I need you to promise to do everything I tell you to do. It’s okay to stop and ask questions if you’re unsure, but you must do what I ask. Keep in mind, I’ll never harm you nor make you do anything you don’t want.”
He seems genuine. How bad can this be? If he hurts me, I can ruin his relationship with his sister. I never would, of course. Besides, if I told her anything about this, she’d hate me forever. He’s family, and families stick together. She’d likely cast me aside and never look back. Best friends don’t stab each other in the back. Yet… that’s exactly what I’ve done, and I’m about to do it again.
“I can’t promise to do everything you ask.” My head shakes, and I stutter. “W-what if you tell me to, um, r-run naked through a crowded parking lot? Do you expect me to just do it? Because I definitely won’t humiliate myself for your benefit.”
Seeing the humour in my example, Devon chuckles. “I’d never ask you to do that because I know it’s not something you’d enjoy.”
“You’re damn right! Public nudity isn’t my idea of a fun time.” I didn’t mean for that to be funny, but he laughs nonetheless.
His knuckles glide tenderly down my cheek. The kindness in his eyes softens me. If he continues to look at me with that much affection, I very well could fall in love with him. A broken heart is not desired; knowledge and experience are the goal.
Growing up, he was so cold and distant. I thought he was an asshole. The way he’s looking at me now, it’s crystal clear that I couldn’t have been more wrong. How can eyes be so dark and mysterious one moment but so quick to switch to reveal the patience of a compassionate man?
“Let’s eat while we talk. I don’t know about you, but I’m hungry,” he says before he presses a warm kiss to my forehead.
“I’m famished.” My butt slips off the stool so he can drag it back to the island.
He lifts the lid off the pot to give it a quick stir before he scoops some into bowls and sets them on the island. He frowns at the bread being slightly burnt around its edges as he piles the pieces onto a plain white plate. I’m impressed that he’s not trying to wine and dine me with elegant dinnerware.
Devon brings salt, pepper, and grated cheese to the table before he refills our wine glasses and sets the bottle on the table.
I have yet to look away from him as he sits, spoon in hand. His glance meets my stare.
He smiles and says, “How about this: You ask me what you’d like to know, and I’ll do my best to answer.”
“If I don’t know about this stuff, how can I ask questions about it?”
“Touché,” he replies and licks his lips as his spoon swirls his chili.
