Chapter 1
ย
Where is she? Tom Mancini thought as he checked his watch for the hundredth time. He knew she was finished by now andโฆthe doorbell rang. Not wanting to be too eager, he walked slowly to the foyer and opened the door. Her back was to him. โStef?โ
She turned. Her expression brought a huge smile to his lips. She gave him an impish grin. โI passed.โ
Tommy couldnโt help himself. He stepped outside, picked her up and swirled her around. She kept hugging him afterward. โI knew you could do it, Lieutenant Stevens.โ
She hugged him close. โYou were the reason why.โ
Stepping back, he led her inside. โLetโs go sit on the deck.โ They went out through the porch. The lawn rolled back a ways and trees gave the whole yard privacy. โItโs beautiful back here.โ
He crossed to the table. A bottle rested in a cooler along with cheese and crackers. He smiled at her. โIโm prepared.โ
โHow sweet that you had so much confidence in me.โ
He just wished he had more confidence in himself. He wanted to tell her how he felt about her now that they were equal in rank. โOf course I did.โ He grabbed the bottle. Put a towel around it. Pop! The cork flew onto a chair. He poured the bubbly. Gave her a glass.
โTo you, Stefanie Stevens. Congratulations.โ
โAnd to you. Thank you for helping me.โ
โYou wouldโve done it without me.โ
โYeah, but it wouldnโt have been any fun.โย
His gaze held hers over the rim of the glass. โFor me, too. Stef.โ
He broke the eye contact. โLetโs sit.โ
They dropped down onto the two person swing. She was still grinning as she looked out at the yard, then patted the arm of the chair. โDid you get this for your grandparents?โย
โYeah. They sit out here all the time and hold hands.โ
โI want to be like them, someday. With somebody special.โ
Ask her, you idiot.
But the failures heโd had in his love life prevented him from getting out the words.
โWhere are they?โย
Heโd lost the train of thought. โWho?โ
โYour grandparents, silly.โ
โThey went to stay with their sister up in Rochester. Their niece came and got them.โ
โWill they be gone long?โ
โA week. Then Iโm picking them up.โ
โHmm.โ Her grin was mysterious.ย
โSo, what firehouse would you go to if you could choose your placement?โ
โNoah Keatonโs. On the opposite shift. I really like the smallness of the group and the fact that they arenโt as busy as Carsonโs house.โ
โYeah, that appealed to Noah too.โ He took a sip.ย
โDid you want to go to Engine 2?โ
โI was just happy to get a placement. I had to wait a while.โ
โI will too, Iโm sure.โ
He toed the rocker back and forth. โWhat did your mother think about all this?โ
โShe doesnโt know yet. I came right here, like we agreed.โ
โThat makes me feel good.โ
She turned her whole body to him. โHow good, Tom?โ
โWhat do you mean?โ
โDonโt pretend you donโt know.โ
Take the chance. He set down his glass and took hers, placed it next to his, their sides touching. โI do know from my end, Stef. But howโโ
She threw her arms around him. Plastered herself to him. โKiss me, please. Iโve been dreaming about that.โ
The minute his mouth touched hers, he felt the spark. It was like lightning. He deepened the kiss. She opened to him. He explored her mouth, nipped her lips until they were both squirming. He stood. Pulled her up. It felt totally normal to scoop her into a carry and head toward the bedroom. Unable to believe this was happening, he set her on the bed and began to unbutton his shirt.
She opened hers.
Then he dove in.
#ย
Stef awoke to a sound. The doorbell. Tom was fast asleep so sheโd just take a peek at who was there. Then sheโd decide if sheโd wake him.
Throwing on his shirt, she tiptoed to the foyer. A woman stood on the stoop, facing the street. Well, this was awkward. Stef pulled open the door and the woman turned around. Oh, she was pregnant. Visibly. โWho are you?โ the woman asked.
โUm, Iโm Stef. Who are you?โ
โThen Tommyโs got a girl on the hook again.โ
โPardon me.โ
She touched her belly. โI was another one of them.โ
Stefโs gaze dropped to the womanโs stomach. โWhat are you saying?โ
Before she could respond, she heard, โStef, what are youโฆโ He came to the door in his jeans. No shirt. โLila?โ
โHello Tom.โ
โWhat do you want?โ
โIโm five months pregnant. Iโm the last woman you dumped.โ
His eyes widened like saucers. โIs itโโ
โYours? Yep. Congratulations, youโre going to be a daddy.โ
He turned to Stef. โIโm so sorry.โ
โYeah,โ she said heading to the back of the house. โI am too.โ
She felt a clutch in her heart as she found her own clothes. She was almost dressed when he came in.ย
โStef. Let me explain.โ
โNo need. You got a lot to deal with here. But one of the things isnโt me.โ She finished buttoning her shirt. โDonโt contact me again.โ
โStefโฆโ
She raced out of the room, to the foyer. She caught a glimpse of Lila in the living room. Tears threatened, but she kept going. Out the door. Out of the driveway. And out of Tomโs life for good.ย
#
โHey, honey. Iโm almost ready.โ Vanessa, her mother, called out from the bedroom of her condo.ย
โNo worries.โ She took a bottle of water from the fridge and sat in the dining area.
Her momโs living space was something. She had a knack for decorating and the black lacquer table with red cushioned chairs was a stellar example. In through the wide archway was a huge living space. All black and red, too. Sheโd separated areas intuitively, so she had a desk in the corner, with a huge curved lamp, and black book cases, then across the way, was a living area consisting of one long curved couch with red pillows.ย
Vanessa came out to the kitchen. โHey, thanks for waiting.โ Her momโs outfit, a simple black sleeveless one piece suit with a wide belt of hammered gold, dangling earrings and bangles to match. The front plunged discreetly.
Stef had chosen to dress in her style too.ย
โWould you like me to drive?โ her mother asked.
โNo, Iโm okay with it.โย
Vanessa studied her face. โWhat arenโt you okay with?โ
โIโll tell you over drinks.โ
They arrived at the Glen Edith, a beautiful restaurant overlooking a gorge with a waterfall. Theyโd snagged a table outside and the sat close to the railing, in a corner. A waiter approached them.
โGood evening, Ms. Stevens. Would you like the champagne you ordered?โ
โI would. Thank you.โ
When he left, Stef said, โYou didnโt have to.โ
โOf course I did. Itโs not every day that a daughter achieves the rank of lieutenant in the fire service.โ She reached across the table to take Stefโs hand. โI want to celebrate.โ
โOkay.โ Stef put the white napkin on the lap of her slate-blue skirt which had a matching top that fell nicely over her breasts. It was sleeveless, too.
The beginning of August night was warm but comfortable because of the shade and a breeze from the water. They made small talk until the champagne arrived, then her mom toasted to Stef. She took a sip. Hmm. Cool and dry.
โAll right, weโre alone. Spill.โ
She faced her mother squarely. โI slept with Tom last night.โ
Vanessaโs eyes widened. โWow, thatโs a big step.โ
โI know. I was just so happy and he was elated that Iโd passed. I promised Iโd come to see him right after the test. We kind of got carried away.โ
โYou know honey, thereโs nothing wrong with that.โ Her mother was a liberal feminist who had taught her that sex was good and healthy.
โWell, first off, I donโt get involved with firefighters.โ
โI know.โ Her ash-brown brows knitted. โBecause of those awful rumors.โ
โAnd second, something really fluky happened.โ
When she related the visit from a woman who claimed to be his ex, and pregnant, Stef remembered the shock and disappointment of the confrontation.ย
โOh, my God. Oh, damn it.โ
โI know. I probably would have broken my own rule about firefighters and dated him. But this sealed the deal not to do it.โ
โThat would be a hard road to navigate, especially in a new relationship.โ
โRight. A relationship I donโt even want a serious one.โ
โThereโs always Harry.โ
Stef laughed. โHarryโs a great guy. Not the settling down type, though.โ Stef had been dating him off and on but the relationship was casual.
โSo, how was the sex with Tom?โ
She felt the heat rise to her face. โI didnโt expect him to have so muchโฆexpertise. He knew a lot. More than any other guy Iโve been with.โ
โDarling, there havenโt been that many.โ
โI know. But thereโs more. He was so tender. Andโฆslow.โ
โWhew! A powerful combination.โ
โI know. Thatโs why I said, itโs too bad.โ
โWhat did he want from you?โ
โHe got as far as let me explain and I cut him off.โ
โMaybe that was hasty.โ
She took a hefty sip of the champagne. โOh, Lord, it was, Mom, believe me.โ
โAll relationships are messy, honey.โ
โNot with you. You had a great marriage with Daddy and now with Addison.โ
She just watched Stef. โAbout that.โ
โOh, no, youโre getting married?โ
โWhat? No. Actually, Iโm going on a cruise with him. I have vacation saved up and Iโm taking two weeks.โ
โThatโs generous of him.โ
โWhat do you mean? Oh, heโs not paying for me.โ
โMom, heโs rich.โ
โI wonโt be indebted to him. Itโs the fastest way to kill the sizzle.โ
Now Stef laughed. โYouโre something else, Mother.โ
โSo are you, Stefanie. Now, back to the expert in bed. Are you sure you want to ditch him?โ
She sighed. โI have to. My careerโs too important to me. How would that look, me hooking up with a guy who has a pregnant girlfriend?โ
โShitty, I guess. But other peopleโs opinions havenโt stopped you from doing anything in your past.โ
โIf I want a career in firefighting, other peopleโs opinions have to matter. So no, Tommy Mancini is out of my life.โ
#
ย
โOkay, Mancini, talk!โ This from Adam. The Brothers of Fire had just finished up their fun at ???. Tim had snagged a table way in the corner of the big gym-like space, where they could see the action but it was quiet enough to talk.
โWhy me?โ Tommy asked grumpily. He was more depressed than heโd ever been in recent memory.
Tim, next to him, socked his shoulder. โYouโre wound up tight. Your expression looks like you just lost your best friend, and you mumbled the whole night. And you played like shit. Look, Tommy, weโre here for you.โ
He shot a glance at Stark. Adamโll mock me.โ
โNo, I wonโt, I promise.โ
โWell, two big things happened this past weekend. Stef Stevens passed her lieutenantโs exam and weโฆhooked up afterward.โ
โHooked up as inโฆโ Noah asked.
โWhat it always means,โ Jarek explained. โSo, Tom, that sounds like good news. Or was it awful?โ
โIt blew the top of my head off. Hers, too.โย
โWell, then?โ
โWe fell asleep, but I got a visitor. Remember Lila?โ
โOh, yeah, the party girl.โ Noah frowned. โYou were better off without her.โ
โSheโs pregnant.โ
Four jaws gaped.
Tim recovered first. โIs it yours?โ
โShe said it is. Right in front of Stef.โ
Noah scowled. โOh, boy, bad luck.โ
โShe also told Stef she was another one of my girls I dumped.โ
โYou said she dumped you.โ This from Adam.
โOkay,โ Jarek put in. โI got something to say about this. Lacey heard that you didnโt dump most of the women you said did. It was the other way around. I didnโt say anything because I didnโt want to call you a liar.โ
โHell. I thought they dumped me. Some of โem gave ultimatums. Other just never answered my call.โ He shrugged. โI thought they were ditching me.โ
โYouโre pretty young, Tom. Maybe you didnโt see things right.โ Jarek again.
โMaybe. But thatโs not the issue now. First off, I want to be with Stef. Second, I canโt find out if the kidโs mine.โ
Adam had been on his phone while he was talking. It pissed Tom off.
โOr course you can.โ He held up his cell. โListen to this. Thereโs a non-invasive test that can check the free floating DNA that escapes the placenta and is present in the motherโs blood. A blood sample from the mother can be compared to a DNA swab from the father.โ
Tommyโs face blanked.ย
โWhat Tom?โ
โShe said she wouldnโt take one because it would hurt the baby.โ
โUntrue. And if she lied about that, she could by lying about the paternity.โ
โWhy would she?โ
โJesus, Tom, I been telling you youโre a catch.โ Tim shook his head. โYouโre great looking, you said you were good in bed, and you got a well-paying job.โ
He sat back. His whole body went limp. โFuck.โ
โNo, donโt give up. If you really want Stef, go after her.โ
โShe dum–โ
โDonโt say it!โ Tim again. โDonโt assume anything. Call her or better yet go see her.โ
โWhat would I say?โ
โMostly what you just told us. And how you feel about her.โ
โI donโt want to harass her. I hate those kinds of actions.โ
Noah spoke. โIโd say the fact that she slept with you is motivation enough.โ
โOkay, Iโll think about it. Now, letโs talk about all of you.โ
Chapter 2
Stef was home cleaning the house. All of her bravado of the night with her mother had suddenly turned to sadness. She was vacuuming the floor, cleaning as she always did to fight the doldrums. Had her mother been right? Could she have Tommy in her life?
What a nightmare it would be. She hardly knew him.
No, she did know him. He was one of the good guys.
Her side doorbell rang. She shut off the machine, and the quiet was startling. She crossed to the door and opened it up.
There he was, leaning against the railing at the top of the outdoor staircase. He wore jeans and his firefighter navy T-shirt. โHi.โ
โHi.โ She knew how she looked. Ragged cutoff, a tank top, barefoot. She even had a scarf on her head. โHi.โ
โCleaning?โ
โYeah.โ
โYou told me you cleaned when you were upset or sad. Which is it?โ
She put a hand on her hip. โBoth.โ
โCan I come in?โ
โI told you we were done. Go find you pregnant girlfriend.โ
โIโll go if you really want me to. But we both feel bad. Come โon, Stef. Letโs talk.โ
She sighed heavily. God she wanted to say yes. โOkay. For a bit.โ She led him through her galley kitchen to the living room/dining area. Since the vacuuming was her last chore, she wound up the cord and stashed it in the pantry.ย
โSit.โ He took a chair in the seating area facing a window. She sat on the couch that angled up to it and tugged off the scarf. She ran a hand through her hair. โGo ahead. Tell me why youโre here.โ
โBecause I want you in my life.โ His expression was sincere, as was his tone.
โWe donโt even know each other that well.โ She lied, but she had to protect herself.
โYou know thatโs a lie. Weโve spent a lot of time together and admit it, the sex was off the charts.โ
โWhat happened to the modest Tommy?โ
โI want you.โ
โYouโll get over that. So will I. I canโt be with a man who has a pregnant girlfriend.โ
โLetโs talk about Lila.โ
โThatโs the last thing I want to do.โ
โSheโs the elephant in the room.โ
โAll right. But I donโt want lurid details.โ
Briefly, he told her about how they met, how long they went out, how it was very casual. โWe stopped seeing each other about five months ago.โ
โWhat happened?โ
โShe wanted to get more serious. I didnโt. When she said she wouldnโt settle for that, I took it as a rejection.โ
โHow do you see this playing out?โ
โFirst off, I need to find out if the baby is mine.โ
โDo a DNA test.โ
โShe wonโt.โ
โBoy, thatโs suspicious.โ
โAnd if it is mine, Iโll be its father. But I wonโt be with her. A lot of guys have children with other women. Two are on your shift.โ
โYeah, and the complain about being away from the kids.โ
โWouldnโt it be worth it to try?โ
She looked at the ceiling. โMaybe I would, Tommy. But Iโm worried about how that would look. I want to rise in the ranks of the fire department and I canโt afford a blemish on my record.โ
โIโd be a blemish?โ
โThe whole situation would be.โ
He stared hard at her. โYouโre a feminist, right?โ
โYou know I am.โ
โIf a guy got girl pregnant, and had a child out of wedlock, that wouldnโt hurt his career at all.โ
โI-โ She shut up.ย
โHe wouldnโt Stef. Maybe you could claim that right for yourself?โ
She didnโt respond because he was right.ย
He got up and crossed to her. She knew she smelled sweaty. He took her hand. Held it in both of his. โI have a proposal. Be with me, see me, until I can figure out a way to get her to take the DNA test. Or if she wonโt, until the childโs born. If itโs mine, and weโre still together, then you decide what to do.โ
โIโm wary of that, weโll be too close then. How far along is she?
โSix months.โ
โSo weโd spend the months together.โ She forced herself to go on. โI wouldnโt want to let you go then.โ
โIโd feel the same way. What does that tell you Stef?โ
โWhat do you mean?โ
โThat you already care about me. And I care about you.โ
โWeโll get over it.โ
โI donโt want to. And if youโre upset and sad, neither do you.โ
#
Carson sat in his car in front of Tommyโs house, staring at it. Should he go in? God, the kid was so naรฏve. He needed somebody to look after him. โShit,โ he said as he got out of the Porsche. โThis isnโt a good idea.โ
Still, he made his way up the driveway and over the brick sidewalk to a nice front porch. Against his better judgement, he rang the bell.ย
He answered it. And his jaw dropped. โCarson? What are you doing here?โ
โI came to talk to you?โ
โThatโs great. Come in.โ
He walked inside. Nice house. He knew Tommy had remodeled. โCome out to the back sunroom.โ
Carson followed him and took a seat on the rattan chair. Tommy said, โWant something?โ
โYeah, Iโll have a beer.โ
After Tommy returned, he set the bottles down. The he sat. โItโs so great having you here.โ
โThis isnโt a social visit. I came to give you some advice.โ He drew a card out of his shirt pocket and handed it to Tommy.
He looked down. โStuart Associates? Who are they?โ
โMy lawyer. I made you an appointment for next week.โ
Tommyโs eyes narrowed on him. โFor what?โ
Carson came to the edge of his seat and linked his hands between his knees. โTim Daniels called me. He told me about Lila Hart.โ
โJesus!โ
โDonโt get mad. He thought I might be able to help. I think you should keep the appointment and see what your legal recourse is. About the DNA test. And if the kidโs yours, you need a lawyer anyway.โ
โWhy?โ
โBecause in New York State, a petition can be filed in Family Court to make her take a DNA test. And if the kid is yours, a lawyer can fight for your rights.โ
Like?โ
โCustody of the child. Fair payments of child support. Those kinds of things.โ
โI looked this up online. I know someone who went through this. His best advice is to get a lawyer.โ
โHow can somebody force her to do this?โ
โWell, the court canโt force her. But then she could be found in contempt and suffer a fine or even jail time. But it didnโt get that far with the guy I know.โ
Tommy leaned back. โFuck. This is really complicating my life.โ
โA child always does. Youโll deal with it. But donโt jump the gun. Donโt assume anything until you know if youโre the father.โ
Tommy watched Carson. He was smart and savvy. Tommy wasnโt. โYouโre right. I should have thought of that.โ
โIโm guessing your mindโs swirling about all this.โ
He didnโt know the half of it. He could still see the Stef in her home, crying, telling him she wouldnโt take the chance.
โMy mind is full of this situation.โย
โRightfully so. But you need information. Get it, please.โ
โAll right, I will.โ
#
Three nights later, the P.A. crackled out, โFire at Crystal City Towers. Engine 2 and 5, Truck 2 and Rescue 5 go into service.โย ย
The five firefighters on Tommyโs squad bolted up and bounded out of bed. They raced to bay, still wearing the nightly attire of shorts and T-shirts. Stuffing their feet and arms into their turnout gear, they climbed onto the truck. Abby Gaines, the driver, turned on the sirens and headed out. Tommy had grabbed the printout.ย โThis is a big one. Multiple apartments are burning at the assisted living complex.โ
Because it was outside his territory, the truck arrived in six minutes and Tommy leapt out. Battalion Chief Cummings at Incident Command met him even before he even reached the command post. โTommy, get your team out back. Only one section is burning in the rear on Floor 2. Douse it. The Truck 2 is out of this section and on its way, but we canโt wait. Your engine guys have to go inside and do search and rescue.โ He started away when the chief called out, โAnd be careful, the grass is slick.โ
In under a minute, the rig was in position. Fingers of gray smoke curled out of the roof. Tom manned the nozzle himself with Lopez behind him.
Bucked back a bit by the force of the hose, Tom poured water on blaze. It went out quickly.
With Lopez carrying the hose, they headed inside and up the staircase. No flames were visible up here and only a bit of smoke lingered hallway. โItโs 112. Right here. Sanders, break down the door.โ
A big guy, Sanders lifted his foot and hit the wood, splintering it on the first try. โSanders, check the kitchen and the closets. Larson and Lopez, go into the room on the right. Iโll take the left one.โย
The team separated. Tom opened the door and it slammed behind him just as he got inside. Odd. He heard a woman coughing. โI got a resident here, Chief. Iโll carry her out.โ Still on his knees, he gave the frail older lady some of his air. He heard from his guys, โWe need help with this man. Heโs big and resisting.โ
โSanders,โ he ordered through the radio. Go help them.โย
Then he picked his victim up to chest and headed for the door.ย
When he opened it, fire flared up in the hallway. Jesus, Lopez had the hose. โFire reignited, Lopez. Bring the hose.โย
โWe just got down the stairs the victim. Took three of us to stop his flailing and get down the steps. But weโll come right back up.โ
โNo time for that. Thereโs a window in here.โ He said calmly into the radio. โIโll need a ladder Chief.โ
โTruck 2, get a ladder up to the east back window.โ
Close to the wall, he walked over, set his victim down and lifted the frame.โ Miraculously the thing opened. Tom scooped up the old lady again.ย
Noah Keaton appeared at the top of the ladder. โGive her to me, Tommy.โ
Gingerly, Tom handed her out. Noah situated the woman to face him, his legs between hers, and he gripped onto her torso. It was slow going down.ย ย
He heard the chief say, โExit the window, Mancini. Fast.โ
When the woman was safe in the grass, he climbed out the building and descended the ladder. Heโd gone a couple of rungs.
A loud whoosh. The ladder went out from under him.
Tommy fell face first.
#
Stef was rolling up Engine 5โs hose in the front of the building when she heard over the radio, โMay Day, May Day, a ladder collapsed in the back. Firefighter down. Firefighter down.โ
The chief said, โTaylor, anybody free?โ
โYep. Two of us.โย
โGo back and help. I just sent the Med-Truck there, too.โ
Stef and Carson rounded the east side of building and came around the corner. They hurried over to the others. The ladder lay on the ground and a firefighter was face down in the grass. Two others were tending to him. Both Carson and Stef knelt down. โFuck. Itโs Tommy.โ
Stef froze. Then, โIs he breathing?โ
Noah Callahan said, โYeah. But we havenโt moved him. We checked his limbs as much as we could through his turnout pants. His boot is at an odd angle.ย
Just then, the Med Truck pulled up close to them and two women hurried over, one carrying a gurney. They both knelt. Pierson said, โSecure him with the C-collar, Mackenzie.โย
Mackenzie slid the collar under him and immobilized his neck.
Noah told them what happened.ย
Pierson set down the gurney. โTurn him over carefully, watching out for the foot.โย
Tommy moaned as four people helped ease him over.
Dear God, Stef thought, his face was all bloody.ย
โI gotta clean him to see if heโs still bleeding.โ Mackenzie dug for something in her bag then gently wiped his face.ย
โNo open wound,โ Mackenzie said.
Pierson took out a knife and cut sliced his turnout coat arms, did the same for his pants, then ran her hands along his the bones. โNothing suspicious. Same thing, guys. Get him on the gurney.โ
More moans from Tom, louder moans. They cut Stef to the quick. Once he was secure, they medics raised the stretcher and led him to the truck.ย
Carson turned to Noah. โWhat the fuck happened?โ
โThe guy who was heeling the ladder took my victim from me. And left his position to hand her to someone else. Just as I jumped off to heel it, the ladder fell.โ
โMancini was already coming down? Why would he do that?โ
โI donโt know. But this is my group, I take full responsibility.โ
โItโs unacceptable.โ
โI know, Carson.โ Noahโs tone was sad.
โClean everything up back here. Weโre going to the front.โ
Stef squeezed Noahโs shoulder as they left. She reigned her in her emotions. She couldnโt show weakness, any indication that she cared about Tommy. But all she wanted was to go the hospital with him. And she needed him to be all right.
#
After shift was over, Chief Cummings called together the two squads whoโd been present at the fire this morning. They came, bedraggled, dirty and exhausted. All of them sat around the table. Cummings asked, โHow did this happen?โ
Noah spoke up and reiterated his story. Stef felt really sorry for him.ย
โWhy, Noah?โ Cummings asked.
โIt happened so fast. I just got to the bottom of the ladder, handed my victim to Kirkland and he had to step back to get ahold of her. I turned to heel the ladder but it went down before I could.โ
โWere you hurt?โ
โNo, Chief. Just knocked aside.โ
โBut Tommy was on the ladder.โ This from Carson. โHe fell face first.โ
โDid you witness that, Stevens?โ
โNo.โ Stef jumped in. โI wasnโt back there when it happened.โ
โI see. So Taylor, were you there?โ
โNo.โ
โSo you donโt really have anything to contribute.โ
Carsonโs face reddened. โSomebody made a mistake.โ โ
โI see bad choices were made. For one, Tommy should have waited until the ladder was secure.โ
โYou canโt blame him for this!โ
Cummingโs stared at Carson. โWatch your tone, Captain.โ
Carson didnโt comment.
โIโm not blaming anybody. Now, Back to Noahโs team. What do you think?โ
Noah said, โIt happened in seconds. But as I said, Iโm officer on group 2. I take the blame.โ
Kirkland faced the chief. โI should. I backed away.โย
โIt sounds to me like bad luck.โ
โWhat?โ Carson raised his voice.
โIโm not sure it could have been prevented. I donโt see any reason to blame Truck 2.โ
โI do!โ
โWatch your tone, Taylor.โ
โIโm putting in for a reprimand for Truck 2.โ
โAs an officer, you have that right. But Iโll tell you Iโll fight it.โ
Noah deflated. โJust put something in my file.โ
โNo. Carson, you go to Chief Redman and get his take on this.โ
Carson stood. Turned. And walked out of the room.
Cummings glared at him as he left.
The meeting broke up and Stef went home. She showered and changed, then decided, Fuck it. I have a right to go check up on a colleague.ย
When she arrived and saw a number of firefighters in the waiting room. They were from all the squads whoโd been present, plus Tim Daniels, who was sitting with Carson and Jarek Zenko. Adam Stark was missing. She went up to Abby Grimes. โHow is he?โ
โAll I know is what happened at the scene. You were there to hear the medics.โ
Just then two more people entered the room. Tommyโs grandparents. Captain Stark escorted them. Rose gripped his arm and Gus bumped shoulders with him. Stef crossed to them. โHey, Gus and Rose.โย
โHello, honey.โ They hugged.
Do you know what happened?โ
ย
โWhat Adam told us when picked us up. Tommy fell off a ladder.โ She looked around the hospital. How is my boy?โ
She reiterated what the medics had told them.
Chief Redman approached them. He squeezed Gusโs shoulder and put his arm around Rose. โKeep the faith.โ
Within a few minutes, a doctor came out. Everyone crowded around him. โHey Chief, firefighters,โ he said to the group. His gaze landed on the Mancinis.ย
Redman said, โThese are Tommyโs grandparents.โย
The doctor addressed them. โTommyโs been X-rayed from head to toe. Weโre sending him for an MIR as soon as his ankle is stabilized. So far, the damage is miraculously scarce. Though heโll probably be black and blue and sore for a long while.โ
Rose wept. Gus lifted his chin. โWe will take care of him.โ
โHeโll be here a couple of nights. Mr. and Mrs. Mancini, you can see him after the MRI.โ
โIs he awake?โ Stef asked.
โHe was. But we gave him something for the pain. So heโll sleep.โ
โWeโll wait,โ Gus put in.ย
โSo will we,โ all around from Truck 2, Engine 5 and The Brothers of Fire.
Chapter 3
Adam awoke with a start. He took a look at his watch. 3 oโclock. Hell! Laying back on the pillows, he sighed heavily. Jesus, Stark, go back to sleep. But he couldnโt. What a night. Heโd gotten home around five. Had fallen right to sleep. But now, after only a couple of hours, he was conscious again.
Might as well give into it. When he and Beth split, these early awakenings had been frequent. Since he met Stella, theyโd gone away. He pictured her sweet face as sheโd been two nights in bed. An adventurous lover, she wrung him out. Then clung to him afterward. He liked both.
Beth used to turn over and go to sleep. Then again, the sex had been terrible the few months before theyโd split. Donโt think about Beth. He got up to erase the memories that kept coming when he wasnโt strong enough to resist them.
A man is strong, Adam. We donโt show emotions.ย
Just what he needed, his father in his head.ย
As he fixed coffee, he thought of Tommy. Heโd gotten petrified that the boy would die. This is what the Brothers of Fire had done to him. But something kept him attached to them. He hadnโt figured it out yet. Sure he liked them and he really got into the lives.ย
The phone rang. It would have awakened him anyway. โStark.โ
โGood morning, Adam.โ
โBeth, what do you want now.โ
โI heard about Tommy Mancini. Iโm wondering how he is.โ
โHuh, thatโs new. Sympathy about my job.โ
Silence.ย
Shit, he couldnโt help needling her. โSorry. I didnโt get much sleep.โ
โThatโs okay.โ
โHe was in and out of consciousness but the miraculouslyโthe docโs wordโnothing major is wrong with him. I waited until they got the MRI back, and his brain is fine. Then I took his grandparentsโ home.โ
โTommyโs grandparents?โ
โYeah, I developed a liking for them, I guess.โ
โThatโs the Adam I love.โ
โBeth, stop it.โ
โWhy?โ
โA hundred reasons. One is the girls. Donโt mess with me.โ
โHmm. Can I bring you supper.โ
โNo. Anything else.โ
โYeah, Iโm really sorry about Tommy. Heโs a nice kid.โ
โUhโฆthanks.โย
Then he clicked off. God, these calls bothered him. He wish they didnโt. They were through as a couple and he liked it that way.
Beside, he had Stella now.
ย
The next day around five, Stef walked in the hospital and went to the desk. โIs Tom Mancini still here?โ
โYes.โ She nodded to the uniform Stef purposely wore. โYou all stick together, donโt you?โ
She gave the woman whose nametag read, Janice, a smile.ย
โWe do, Janice.โ
โHeโd in a Room 41 East now, but there are lots of firefighters in the waiting area.โ
โGood, Iโll join them.โ She was halfway to the elevator when turned back. โJanice.โ The woman looked up. โNot all firefighters are popular as Tom. Heโs a great guy and everybody loves him.โ
โI know. The nurses say heโs a great patient.โ
Stef took the elevator to the second floor and found about a dozen firefighters hanging around. She approached one. โHi, Tim.โ
Tim hugged her. As if he knewโฆ โHey, Stef. Heโs better. Complaining about the immobility.โ
โHowโs his ankle?โ
โBruised but not broken. Two cracked ribs.
Tim looked over her shoulder. โTwo smoke eaters just came out of the room. Come with me.โ He took her hand and led her to the group. โHey, guys. Stefโs here inquiring about Tommy. He helped her pass the Lieutenantโs exam. Can we let her go in next?โ
They agreed.ย
Tim said, โTake fifteen minutes.โ
She headed to the room. From the doorway, she saw Tom lying in bed, his ankle propped up on a pillow.
Light filtered in from the slatted blinds. He looked bigger. โHi, Tom.โ
He glanced over. โHey.โ His voice was gravelly.
She went further inside. โI came to see how you are.โ
โCome closer, honey.โ
Oh, geez.ย
She walked up to the bed, got her first good look at him. And gasped. โOh, God, Tom. Youโre so battered.โ Most of his face was black and blue and red. His arms, too. She imagined his chest and legs were as bad.
โNever this seen these many bruises on someone?โ
โNope.โ
โMe, either.โ He reached for her hand. His was puffy and looked sore.
She grasped it lightly.ย
Even then he winced. โSit.โ
Letting go of him, she sat. โAre you in a lot of pain?โ
โNo, thanks to modern medicine. Iโm sure I will be when I leave here.โ
โDid they say when you could go home?โ
โTheyโre gonna decide today. I canโt quite believe I donโt have serious injuries.โ
โYour ankle?โย
โSprained. Bound now. I must be one lucky guy.โ
โIf you are, you deserve it.โ
โDid you see me fall? I know were at the fire.โ
โNo. The chief sent us around to help out but you were already down.โ
โNoah explained what happened. No oneโs to blame.โ
โDo you think he agrees with you?โ
โI donโt know.โ
โNobody got in trouble.โ
โThey shouldnโt. It was a fluke. Kirkland had to step back to grab the victim. But they still might censure me. I didnโt wait long enough to come down.โ
โWhy didnโt you?โ
โThe fire was creeping to the window for oxygen. It had almost reached me. So I went out quick.โ
โNobody will blame you for that.โ
He cocked his head. โThanks for coming. Does this mean you changed your mind about us?โ
โI have to say my heart was in my mouth over this. And I hardly slept for worry over you.โ
โIโm sorry for all that. And Iโm not. Itโs something for you to think about. Tell me you will.โ
โI will.โ
Just then Tim pushed open the door. Timeโs up. Gus and Rose will be here in half an hour, and he needs to rest for them.โ
โThanks Tim. Close the door.โ
Stef stood. โIโll leave.โ
โOkay, but kiss me first.โ
She gave his cheek a light peck.
โI hardly felt that. On my mouth.โ
She leaned over and kissed his lips. It was a nice kiss. A kind kiss. With a lot of potential.
โThere thatโs better. Come back tonight. The guys go home by eight.โ
โYou sure?โ
โYeah.โ
โAll right. Iโll see you then.โย
#
Tom hadnโt take his sleeping pill, so when Will Kirkland came inside, he was wide awake. Heโd asked the nurse to send the firefighter in the waiting room home, but his colleague must have stayed.ย
Will had hunched shoulders and lines around his face and eyes. โHey, Tom.โ Regret tinged his tone.
โHey, Wil1. Why so glum?โ
โYou know.โ
โGet over here. Sit.โ
Will trudged over and sat. โJesus, Tom, I donโt know what to say.โ
โDidnโt you talk to Chief Cummings?โ
โYeah, he called me. Said I was off the hook. But it doesnโt feel good, what I did.โ
โTell me what other choice you had.โ
โWell, I could haveโฆum, I should have. Fuck it, I was too close to Noah so I had to move back.โ
โRight. Do you think it was Noahโs fault?โ
โNo. He had no choice either. You fell before he could turn around and take my place.โ
โWhat about me?โ
โYou?โ
โYeah, I shouldโve waited until it was safe.โ
โWhy didnโt you?โ
โBecause the fire was on my tail. I had to get out.โ
โWell, then, youโre not to blame either.โ
โSee. Nobody is, as I said.โ
He leaned back. โGod, Iโm glad.โ
โMe, too.โ
โBut look at you.โ
โYeah. I havenโt gotten a mirror yet. I donโt want to scare myself.โ
Relaxed now, Will smiled. โHa!โ
โSo, howโs work?โ
They talked about some fires Truck 2 had been to, then Will left. It was close to 8.ย
Soon, Stef arrived. Sheโd changed into a pair of white shorts and a yellow T-shirt. โHi, Tom.โ
โHey, you look good.โ
She came up to the bed. โThe wonders of a hot shower.โ
ย Tommy sniffed. He still smelled like fire. โI wish I could take one.โ
โIโll bet.โ
โYeah, today, after you left. With a crutch and two orderlies to help me to the john but no shower. It exhausted me.โ
โNo worries. Weโre used to smelling.โ
She started to sit.โ
โI got a better idea.โ He patted the side of the bed. โGet in.โ
โNo, Tom. Itโll hurt you.โ
โWeโll be careful. I want to hold you.โ
โCan you lift your arm?โ
โYes, but you can just cuddle up.โ
She shook her head.
โCome on woman. Iโm hurt. I should have my way.โ
โAnd here the nurses said youโre good patient.โ
He grinned. Then his brows raised.
#
Stef couldnโt resist him. And he almost died. So she kicked off her sandals and gingerly got on the bed. She moved in as close as he could. They laid there in silence for a while. He did smell like smoke, but his nearness thrilled her โSo,โ he said, โDoes this changed anything?โ
Sheโd been afraid of that question. โYou mean about us.โ
โYep. You told me you were terrified when you saw me on the ground.โ
Remembered the fear, she shivered. โEverybody was.โ
โRight now, this is about you. Come โon, Stef. You had more than a colleagueโs reaction. See me. We can do it on the sly if you want.โ Though Tommy would hate that, heโd do it to be with her. โLife is short, babe. We both are faced with that knowledge every time we walk into a fire.โ
She sighed heavily. โTell me a few things first. Whatโs going on with Lila?โ
โI got an appointment with a lawyer this week. Oh, shit, I wonโt be able to make it.โ
โMaybe he or she will reschedule.โ
โShe.โ
โWhat exactly could she do?โ
He filled her in on Carsonโs information.
โThat sounds promising. Okay, Iโll see you on the sly. Though sneaking around doesnโt sit right with me.โ
โI just had the same thought. But still, I want to see if we have something here.โ
โI do too.โย
โGreat.โ He kissed the top of her head. Tell me what happened at work after the incident.โ
โWe had a briefing with Chief Cummings. He didnโt fault any of us. But Carso did.โ
โWho?โ
โNoah and his team. Carson made an ass of himself.โ
โHe cares about me.โ
โHe has responsibilities as a captain. He should have kept his mouth shut.โ
โWhen does your group go back to work?โ
โTomorrow. On days. Heโll be more of a bear than usual.โ
โI wish I could help.โ
โYou just have to get better.โ She glanced at the clock. โAnd I have to go. My alarm clock goes off at five a.m.โ
โI understand. Stay just a little while longer.โ
She hesitated, then said, โAll right,โ and luxuriated in the fell of him next to her.โ
ย
โCan I get you anything, bambino?โ
โNo grandma. Iโm fine. You two go back to your apartment. Go on with your day. Iโll text if I need anything.โ
โBe careful, boy,โ Grandpa warned and left with his wife.ย
Tom had come home a day later than he thought heโd would. And his grandparents were doting on him. He also didnโt want them to know about the lawyer or Lila. When they left, he looked down at his big blue boot. He had to wear it for a few weeks. The sprain wasnโt that bad but he did have to be careful.
Grabbing a pillow, he made his way to the front porch and sat on the lounge chair out there with his foot raised. A snazzy little Porsche pulled up in the driveway. He watched the driver get out and head to the front. She wasnโt at all the bookish woman heโd expected. She was very pretty. โHi, Tom.โ
โHello, Ms. Grant. Thank you for coming here.โ
โNo worries. We meet clients at a lot of places outside the office.โ
โStill, Iโm grateful.โ Her amber gaze rested on him. โWow, youโre really battered.โ
โYep. I havenโt looked in a mirror yet.โ
โNothing that wonโt heal right?โ
โRight. Sit down.โ
She sat in a chair across from him. Her pink summer dress draped over her knees. โCarson gave me the details. Anything want to add?โ
โNot at this time.โ
She took her tablet out of the gigantic purse she carried. Called something up. โItโs pretty clear what weโd want. Weโd file a petition and send it to a judge. Heโll okay it and then set a court appearance. In the end, heโll decide what to do, but these petitions are rarely tuned down. Youโll have to be there along with Ms. Hart, and youโll both be asked questions.โ
โLila will freak. Sheโs pretty emotional.โ
โWe can deal with that. You know she canโt be forced to take a paternity test.โ
โI know. But thereโll be legal consequences, right?โ
โYes. Sheโll be charged with contempt of court and fined if she refuses. Technically, she could be put in jail.โ
โThat never happens to pregnant women.โ
โNo, it doesnโt. Itโll be a hefty fine, though. Sheโs an exotic dancer, right?โ
โShe has been. She had to quit.โ
โSo doesnโt have much money?โ
โNot much.โ
โHow many times did you have intercourse with her?โ
โFor two months. A lot.โ
โThis is indelicate but I hope you used protection.โ
โEvery single time.โ
โDid she sleep around?โ
โWell, sheโs had boyfriends. I saw her with another guy around town right after we broke up.โ
โYou broke up with her, right?
โYes. She wanted more out of the relationship than I would give.โ He yawned. โOh, sorry.โ
โNo worries. I think I have enough with the papers you filled out to prepare the documents we need. And youโre tired.ย Iโll leave now.โ
โThank you Ms. Grant.โ
โYouโre welcome. And call me Melanie.โย
โAnd Iโm Tom.โ
She gave a little smile. โCarson calls you Tommy.โ
He rolled his eyes. โI know.โ
When Melanie left, he lay back in the chaise thinking about what he was doing. Man, he hoped it was the right thing.
He laid his head back. Relaxed. Felt his eyes close.
โTommy.โ
Someone was shaking him. He awoke fully and was disappointed Lila had come. He wished she was Stef. โWhat are you doing here?โ
โYouโve ignored all my calls. What the hell happened to you?โ
โI fell off a ladder.โ
โOh, poor baby.โ She sat in the chair Melanie vacated. โI could take care of you.โ
โI have good care. And I told you I didnโt want to see you for a while.โ
โItโs been a while.โ She put her hand on her belly. โBabyโs kicking. Wanna feel?โ
โNope, not until I know itโs mine.โ
Lifting her chin in defiance, she said, โI wonโt agree to a test that would harm the baby.โ
โAll I need is a blood test.โ
โReally, I thought you had to have its DNA? Done with a big needle.โ She shuddered.
โYouโre wrong, Lila. All I need is a noninvasive blood test.โ
โWhen did they develop that?
โTechnology advances are made every day in medicine.โ
โStill I wonโt do it.โ
โI should tell you now that Iโm taking you to court to do one.โ
โThe court canโt force me to have the test.โ
โYouโre right. But youโll have to be in court. And the legal consequences of not coming are hefty. In any case, youโll be hearing from my lawyer.โ
โYou hired a lawyer?โ
โUh-huh. And if the baby is mine, Iโll support you through the rest of the pregnancy and then Iโll provide child support.โ
โYouโre damn right you will.โ She stood, her whole body tense. โYouโre a prick for doing this to me.โ
Ignoring her slur, he shook his head. โIโd like you to leave now.โ
โYouโll speak to the mother of your child like that?โ
โWhen I know if you are, Iโll be nicer. But actually, now,ย Iโm pretty pissed that you didnโt find out for sure if the kidโs mine before you made this accusation. I would have given you a DNA sample.โ
โYou got some nerve, buster.โ She turned and huffed away.ย
For a little while, he thought about what having a baby of his own would be like. Heโd wanted one for a long time. But he wouldnโt be tricked into it.
And if he was gonna father a kid, heโd want it to be with someone he loved. He thought of Stef. Hmm. Thatโd be something.ย ย
