Brighter Than the Stars by Elizabeth O’Roark is now live!
I was raised to believe the danger lived outside our walls. And Ford James looked like the most dangerous thing of all.
I’ve spent my entire life inside Bright Covenant — a religious community with rules for everything, a place where questions aren’t allowed. When my family is sent to heal Westside, a small Florida beach town, I arrive certain of two things: the world outside is exactly as dangerous as I was warned, and Ford James — who vandalized our home before we’d even unpacked — is proof.
He’s the reason I had to leave home during my final year of school. He’s the reason half the senior class wants me gone. But he also makes me question everything I know, and want things I’ve never wanted before—things I’m meant to save for my husband.
Come June, I board a plane to Bolivia, and will return engaged to a member of Bright Covenant.
Which means I have one year to decide if Ford James is really the villain. Or worth burning my world down for.

Grace was being raised in a strict religious household and has always done what was expected of her as she had been warned against the damage that those that don’t understand could cause. When her family moves to Penhallow it is her mindset that she will endure the next year and then move forward with the plans that were previously mad. It doesn’t take long for her to realize how stifling and sheltered her life has been and that hold especially true for Ford.
Ford’s reputation should be enough to ensure that Grace keeps her distance however he can’t deny how intrigued he is by her. She is his complete opposite however he is able to see her and her situation in a way she hasn’t yet realized and soon his animosity for her turns into a need to show her that she can trust him with her truths and he will support her as she transforms from a moth to the butterfly she is meant to be.
This is an emotionally riveting tale of growth, independence and love. Grace’s strength and bravery is inspiring as she is forced to challenge everything she has always believed even if it causes pain to those she loves the most and Ford is there every step of the way not to lead her but to be there for her as she faces an uncertain future.
